The Four Levels Of Self Mastery

Over the past few years I have spent hundreds of hours working with leaders. Whilst initially they came to see me for a variety of reasons (stress, over work, relationship issues at work or home), it became obvious that there were common themes in the work that we did together.

Performance = Potential - Interference.

Most of my clients have the potential to perform at a very high level (both at work and in life) but “interference” stops them from reaching their peak.

This interference comes in several different varieties, but it can neatly be summed up in four separate areas (although there is certainly significant overlap).

1) The first is the physical level. This is the ability of our body to handle pressure and stress in a resilient way. In this area nutrition, exercise and sleep are the most important areas to consider. Very simple changes made here, for example getting 3 sessions of regular exercise per week or getting 8 hours of sleep each night, can have a significant impact on our lives. Interference at this level comes from the opposite - poor diet, lack of sleep and little exercise leaves us struggling to cope with the demands of our lives and causes detrimental effects on our work and personal lives.

2) The second level is mental, the world of thought. Feeling engaged and being challenged mentally are vital to a healthy mind. Unfortunately we live in an age of often overwhelming demands on our time and energy -  whether it’s from emails, internet, family or social pressures. These demands on our mental energy can lead to stress, overwork and overwhelm. We can also find ourselves in the opposite situation though, where boredom and inertia take over, again leading to the feeling of being drained, dispirited and even depressed.

3) The third level is that of emotions. This is a key area and one that is often overlooked when trying to make shifts in our lives.The main reason for this is that a large amount of the interference at the emotional level is found in our subconscious minds. The conditions of our upbringing, the attitudes and values of our parents and society form rigid viewpoints of who we think we are and what we think we are capable of. When working with my clients I often find that this is the area where we often see the most ‘bang for the buck”. Going into the subconscious patterns and limited beliefs is always enlightening for clients as they get to see exactly how they are self sabotaging their own success, often without even knowing they are doing so.

4) The final level is sometimes referred to as “spiritual” but I generally don’t use this title as it can confuse people. What this really refers to is the level of our lives that goes beyond who we are as individuals and looks at our impact on the world around us. This level looks at the legacy that you may want to be remembered for, the difference that you made in your community, or simply how you want to be remembered by those closest to you. It is about more than just your life in isolation and takes a higher view of how you showed up in life and the impact that you had. Interference at this level is caused by confusion and lack of clarity over what is truly important to us. Never considering what we really value or rarely considering how we want to be remembered can make life seem meaningless, never really having a true direction. Connecting to a deeper sense of what is really important to us can make all the difference in life.

Each of these levels is vital in our personal growth. If you would like to know more about any of the areas I have talked about above, please send me an email to andre @ rebalance.gg
